Ruckus at meeting politically motivated, says Prabhu

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: R. Prabhu, MP, chairman of the Vigilance and Monitoring Committee on Central Government Schemes, on Tuesday accused elected representatives of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) of creating "pre-meditated and politically motivated" noisy scenes at the committee meeting.

The meeting of the committee was held at the collectorate here on Tuesday to review implementation of the Union Government-sponsored schemes.

The meeting witnessed noisy scenes as MLAs belonging to AIADMK led by former Minister S.M. Velusamy, accused the committee of according importance to the ruling party (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) representatives. They said that the committee had no powers. They praised the administration during the AIADMK rule and ridiculed the state of affairs now.

Mr. Prabhu told reporters that as a matter of courtesy and political decency, the AIADMK representatives were asked to speak. It was Mr.Velusamy who first spoke and asked about the powers of the committee. He even dubbed the report of the committee as "useless". Next the Rural Industries Minister, Pongalur N. Palanisamy was given a chance to speak since he had to leave for some other function.

The AIADMK MLAs objected to this and wanted the chairman to first answer their queries before others were given a chance to speak. "I told the members to be patient assuring them that queries of every member in the hall would be answered at the end of the meeting. But the noisy scenes continued not allowing the other speakers to voice their opinion. I had pointed out that during the previous Government not a single Minister from the State Cabinet had attended the meeting and the situation had changed today," Mr. Prabhu said.

When the District Panchayat Chairman, C.R. Ramachandran was given a chance to speak, he spoke of the positive aspects in the DMK Government in response to the speech by the AIADMK MLA. This again drew objections from the AIADMK members, he said.
