Focus on changing images of women

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: Visitors to the Madhya Pradesh Kala Parishad gallery here on Tuesday were full of appreciation for the exhibition focusing on the theme "Re-presenting Indian women 1875-1947--A visual documentary".

The exhibition, based on archival photographs depicting the dress reforms and changing images of women in the Indian context, was inaugurated by the Governor, Balram Jakhar.

The photographs on display include a self-portrait of Birchandra and Monomohini (1880).

The caption for this exhibit goes on to narrate that Tripura's modern era began with Maharaja Birchandra (1826-96), who introduced contemporary administrative practices with Bengali which was established as the language of his court. An imposing picture of Nawab Begum Sultan Jahan of Bhopal also caught everyone's attention. She was a tireless worker for women's emancipation and publicly abandoned the pudah two years before her death.
