Thomas Chandy defends his stance

Staff Reporter

Thomas Chandy

ALAPPUZHA: Kuttanad MLA Thomas Chandy has said that Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala should invite K. Karunakaran and K. Muraleedharan and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to the United Democratic Front (UDF) instead of asking him to continue in the UDF.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Thomas Chandy said there was no use in attacking him in public for joining the NCP as he did not take any decision by himself. [Mr. Thomas Chandy was the lone MLA of the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) which merged with the NCP on Sunday. The DIC(K) was in alliance with the UDF in the Assembly elections held in April/May this year.]

Mr. Thomas Chandy said it was the DIC(K) which gave him the ticket in the last Assembly elections. So it was natural for him to join the NCP when the DIC(K) merged with the party.

He said that if the State Congress leadership had political acumen, it should bring back Mr. Karunakaran to the Congress or take steps to make the NCP a partner of the UDF. Mr. Thomas Chandy said he had spoken to Mr. Oommen Chandy and Mr. Chennithala on the issue, but both seemed not much interested.
