`Achuthanandan should resign'

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Kerala Congress(Mani) leader K.M. Mani on Tuesday said Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan should resign as he had informed the Communist Party of India(Marxist) central leadership that internal problems in the party State unit had affected the administration of the State.

Mr. Mani was speaking at a press conference here. Mr. Achuthanandan should bare the problems faced by him in front of the people of the State who had given him a massive mandate and resign. When the internal problems of the leading coalition partner of the LDF were affecting administration, the interests of the State were being harmed, said Mr. Mani.

The Governor should view the situation seriously, he added.

On the threat to the safety of the Baby Dam at Mullaperiyar, Mr. Mani said the Government should take steps to cancel the agreement on the Mullaperiyar Dam with Tamil Nadu if it failed to lower the water level below 136 ft.

The Government should immediately issue a notice to Tamil Nadu on the issue and move ahead to acquire the dam and the surrounding areas if the Tamil Nadu Government failed to respond positively, he said.

The Mullaperiyar and Neyyar issues should not have been linked, he said.

The United Democratic Front had earlier warned Mr. Achuthanandan that any promise on providing water from the Neyyar to Tamil Nadu should have been made only after getting an assurance from it on lowering the water level in Mullaperiyar Dam. But the Chief Minister did not pay heed to it, said Mr. Mani.
