NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday inaugurated the Delhi Pavilion at the India International Trade Fair - 2006. The pavilion projects Delhi as a happening place and focuses upon major infrastructure projects like Metro Rail, flyovers and an elevated Ring Road. The concept of designing is based on the upcoming Commonwealth Games-2010 wherein the upper part of the facade has been given the shape of a stadium and alongside has been depicted the proposed Metro link from Connaught Place to Indira Gandhi International Airport. The design gives a glimpse of what the city will look like in the future. The inside of the pavilion is on the other hand a mini replica of Connaught Place.
Special emphasis
Ms. Dikshit said Delhi had observed various infrastructure constraints over the last few years necessitating a special emphasis on promotion of industry that could achieve optimum level of production without large demands on factory space, power, and also provide employment to skilled personnel. The thrust is on establishment of hi-tech, environment-friendly, Information Technology and related services in Delhi. Apart from this, traditional industries like handicrafts, handlooms, leather goods and household industries are also being promoted. Industry Minister Mangat Ram Singhal said Delhi was bound to emerge as one of the biggest centres of small-scale industries in the country and there was a need to provide the right impetus and direction. Delhi, he added, had a large conglomerate nature to attract commerce, trade and industry and assured that the Delhi Government was committed to facilitating the growth of small and medium industries. Mr. Singhal said the Delhi Government had taken steps like relocation of industries from residential and non-conforming areas to conforming industrial areas in Bawana, Narela, Badli, Jhilmil and Bhorgarh. "The Government is taking all necessary steps to ensure that all possible technological support is made available to the industries to enhance the growth rate of the industries and improve performance." The Delhi Financial Corporation is meeting the financial needs of the industries and the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited is assisting and promoting the interests of small-scale industries in the Capital. A Software Multimedia Park and Science Park at an estimated cost of Rs. 200 crores are proposed to be set up as a joint venture with the private sector. The objective is to provide a state-of-the-art infrastructure for software-driven Information Technology and related services. Govt. also proposes to set up an Expo-City with convention centre at Patparganj where infrastructure facilities are being created for the Commonwealth Games.
