Congress functionaries quit

Staff Reporter

Sequel to warning issued by CPI (Maoist)

KHAMMAM: Mamidi Ramana, Congress party mandal unit president of Vararamachandrapuram, quit his post on Tuesday in view of the threats held out by the CPI (Maoist). He told reporters that he had already forwarded his resignation letter to Khammam district Congress-I president. He claimed to have done so under pressure from his family.

Some more leaders of the Congress are likely to distance themselves from party responsibilities in Bhadrachalam division.

The Sabari area committee of the CPI (Maoist) has sounded a warning to them against continuing in party posts.

The Maoists struck terror in Bhadrachalam division killing S. Sitarama Rao, the Kunavarm mandal unit president of the Congress party and brother in-law of DCC president Vanama Venkateswar Rao four days ago. The leadership of the Sabari area committee has related this killing to the series of encounters in the State.

Some 12 Congress leaders in Chintoor, Vararamachandrapuram and Kunavaram mandals were put on alert by the police in the wake of the incident. So was the case with another nine Congress leaders in Bhadrachalam town. Former zilla parishad chairman Chanda Lingaiah was also among them.

Police advisory

The police issued an advisory to all such leaders on the steps to be taken in the event of receiving threats.

They were given mobile numbers of the police and other agencies concerned with a request to keep them informed of their movements. Leaders of not only the Congress but other political parties facing the threat of Maoists in Venkatapuram and Charla mandals were of moving to safer places as it was rumoured that the Maoist action teams were on the look out for soft targets.

Superintendent of Police Rajeev Kumar Meena has ruled out action teams on the prowl.

He said the killing of Congress leader S. Sitarama Rao was the handiwork of the whole dalam and those involved had already been identified.
