National Library Week celebrations begin

Staff Reporter

Civil society organisations boycott the event

ELURU: The National Library Week celebrations, which began here on Tuesday, lacked vigour with the boycott of various civil society organisations connected to the library movement. As a result, the inaugural of the celebrations proved to be a mere official affair.

Joint Collector V. Durga Das inaugurated the celebrations whilelike D. Kilasapathi Rao, Deputy Director, Adult Education, Venkata Subbaiah, Assistant Director, Department of Education, and S. Srinivasa Jeevan, District Public Relations Officer, spoke at a function held inthe District Central Library.

According to Vennavalli Ramachandra Murthy, joint convener, Swachanda, Samajika, Samskritika Kala Samsthalu, the District Central Library Readers' Forum, Jana Vignana Vedika, Rasana, N.C.K. Sahitya, Sangeeta Parishad, Mahati Music Academy, Kala Deepika Fine Arts Academy and Vikasa Tarangini are on the list of cultural, literary and the other civil society organisations that decided to stay away from the celebrations to protest against what they called the authoritarian attitude of authorities concerned.

The relations between authorities of District Central Library and the organisations strained following a decision to prohibit the use of library premises for any "unofficial purpose."

The precedence had been to use the District Central Library as a forum for discussion of public issues pertaining to the city and music and cultural activities organised by various organisations.

Approach Lok Ayukta

The organisations moved the Lok Ayukta recently seeking the library to be a centre of public activity.
