Call to strengthen coop movement

CHENNAI : The need to strengthen the cooperative movement in the State was stressed by Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin and Cooperation Minister Ko. Si. Mani on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the 53rd All India Cooperative Week celebrations and distributing shields to the best cooperative society at the district and State level here, Mr. Stalin said the cooperative movement in the State dated back to more than 100 years and with a view to creating an awareness among the people of the benefits of the movement, the celebrations were being conducted every year. It was only during the DMK rule that the activities of all departments received a boost.

From Pongal next, free gas stoves would be distributed, he added.

The Secretary, Cooperation Department, S. Machendranathan, said cooperative movement went a long way in fulfilling the basic needs of people — food, clothing and shelter.
