CHENNAI : To differentiate between twins is a difficult task for many. All the more difficult when 64 twins are studying in the same school.

It was a maze of confusion with identically dressed twins assembled in a hall at Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Mogappair, to participate in `Twin Romp' as part of Children's Day celebration on Tuesday. The hall was brimming with several `Nehru chachas' in all age groups in colourful suits to celebrate the day. The youngest `chacha' cut the cake.

All participants including chief guest Raman, twin brother of Lakshman and one of the directors of Lakshman Sruthi Musicals, students and teachers were twins.

UKG students Sneha Vandana and Shruthi Vandana, dressed in bright hues, won the second prize for well-dressed twins.

Prithvi Bagai and Prabhu Bagai of Standard IX won the first place and the third place was given to Nandini and Narmada for their costumes. It was a visual treat to see five pairs of twins performing `Villu Pattu' that highlighted the plight of child labour.

Sridevi and Srividhya of Standard IX were conferred the title of Best Twins. They have often startled teachers who later found out that they were twins studying in different sections.

Besides identical and mixed twins, the school also had identical twin teachers, Ramadevi and Lakshmi Rajan, who performed at the show. Principal P. Prabhakaran said that 24 pairs of twins studied in Standards IV to VIII, which was the highest number of twins in the school.

Elsewhere in the city, Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian received a bouquet of flowers from children, who had been labourers till a few weeks ago. The Mayor was also chief guest at the prize-giving ceremony of a drawing competition organised by Exnora Sports Club and New Sunflower Trust.

About 2,000 school children had taken part in the contest on November 12. They drew and coloured posters on the theme of environmental protection. Frontier Lifeline celebrated the Children's Day ably by screening about 750 children of Spartan School, Mogappair. The awareness programme on early detection of heart disease in children culminated on Tuesday with Deputy Police Commissioner A. Arun as chief guest.

About 100 children in the age group of 4-12 participated in a painting contest hosted by Crayola and Landmark at Spencer Plaza as part of the celebration.

Malavika from Alwarpet, K. A. Mohammed from Ambur and Shilpa from T.Nagar bagged the first prize in different categories. Children from schools around ICF Colony, including ICF Silver Jubilee School, participated in the celebrations hosted by Integral Coach Factory.

They were entertained with magic and ventriloquism shows.

The celebration hosted by Chennai Telephones was more of a family get-together with about 200 employees and their children participating in several events such as drama, cultural and literary events. Television artiste Bombay Gnanam and R. Purushotham, chief general manager of Southern Telecom Projects, participated.
