HYDERABAD: A total of 169 out of the 400 odd lakes in and around Hyderabad falling under the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority have been notified for protection. Of these notified ones, 87 have been marked for immediate treatment with eviction of encroachers as part of the Green Hyderabad Environment Programme which is being grounded next month.
Industrialisation
Of them, 18 lakes have been found highly polluted due to rapid industrialisation. After a review of the steps taken to protect these lakes by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Tuesday, Forest Minister S. Vijayarama Raju told reporters that the lakes of Saroornagar, Safilguda, Langar Houz, Mir Alam, Pedda Cheruvu and Durgam Cheruvu had been fully restored. Five others -- Patel Cheruvu, R. K. Puram, Rangadhamuni Cheruvu, Suddalavani Kunta and Nalla Cheruvu were under treatment. The Chief Minister ordered for immediate eviction of the encroachers Banda Cheruvu at Malkajgir where "politicians are standing in the way". The detailed project report to improve Hussain Sagar would be ready by March next. A 30-MLD capacity sewerage treatment plant would be constructed on Picket Nalla opposite KIMS Hospital and the exiting 20-MLD plant at Khairatabad flyover upgraded.
