Verdict on a six-year-long trial

Anupam Das
GUWAHATI:
The Kamrup District and Sessions Judge on Tuesday sentenced to death the convict in the murder of a 10-year-old.
The verdict came after a nearly six-year-long trial. Nineteen witnesses were examined and cross examined.
The boy's parents told reporters that they were satisfied with the judgment as the killer of their only child had been awarded capital punishment on the Children's Day. They hoped that the judgment would deter others from committing such crimes.
The convict, Anupam Das, had concealed the body in a trunk after sexually abusing and murdering the victim on January 22, 2000. He declined to make any comment while coming out of the courtroom after the death sentence was pronounced.
An electrician by profession, the convict had escaped from the court premises on December 21, 2001. He, however, was arrested at Paonabazar in Imphal by the Manipur Police on July 14 after the boy's father traced him in the neighbouring State.
Earlier the convict had feigned ignorance and joined the family in the search for the boy. But the family suspected foul play and informed the police.
