CBI asked to probe Khairlanji killings

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Government has decided to hand over the probe into the killing of a Dalit family of four at Khairlanji village to the CBI.

"A letter requesting the CBI to take over the investigation would go today," Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil, who also holds the Home portfolio, told reporters on Tuesday.

Demand for enquiry

He said the decision followed several Dalit organisations' demand that the CBI be entrusted with the case for a transparent and impartial investigation. Mr. Patil said the State CID would continue to investigate till the CBI took over.
