Thiruvananthapuram: The vast network of health workers in the Government Health Services would be trained to organise community-level programmes to tackle the alarming spread of non-communicable lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said. Concerted efforts are needed to sustain the achievements the State has made in the health sector. Doctors and nurses working in the periphery would also be given regular training so that they are equipped to deal with the new challenges in the health front, she said. The Health Minister was inaugurating the training programme organised by the State Institute of Health and Family Welfare for field staff of Health Services on Tuesday, the World Diabetes Day, to detect and follow-up life style diseases in the community. The Minister hinted at several reforms that were being planned to make the Health Services more efficient. This included the implementation of the GO recommending separate administrative and speciality cadres for Government doctors. Several other functions, including medical camps and quiz shows were also held in the city on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. A diabetes awareness walk and a quiz programme for students were organised by Diabscreen Kerala. An awareness programme on lifestyle diseaseswas held at Sarvodaya Vidyalaya.
