Mithi criticises claim by Chinese Ambassador

Puducherry: Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi said that the remark, made by the Chinese Ambassador, as reported in the media that Arunachal Pradesh was part of Chinese territory was uncalled for and inappropriate, particularly at a time when bilateral relations between India and China were improving.

In a release here on Wednesday reacting to the claim by the Chinese Ambassador, Mr. Mithi, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, said that the State - erstwhile North East Frontier Agency — was an integral part of British India and was administered by the British Administration and after Independence, by the Government of India. "That Arunachal Pradesh has always been an integral part of India even before 1947 was amply evident from the Acts and Rules of British India," he pointed out.

Mr. Mithi, who was former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, also maintained that the State was never at any point of time in the history under the sovereignty of China.

The birth of the VIth Dalai Lama at Tawang and its religious affinity with that of the free Tibet in the past could not be a reason for China to make any claim to any part of Arunachal Pradesh, as religion did not have any geographical borders, he maintained in the release.
