NEW DELHI: Border Security Force (BSF), Jalandhar, set an Indian record for a longest tie-breaker that lasted 26 shots as the seven-time champion ousted a fancied Salgaocar SC, Goa 13-12 on penalties and qualified for the pre-quarterfinals in the 119th Osian's Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Wednesday. The two teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time. Interestingly, Salgaocar also figured in the match that was decided on sudden-death lasting 24 shots in the 1994 Federation Cup semifinals. Then it had beaten Dempo SC, Goa 12-11 before losing to Mohun Bagan in the title clash. Th. Kameshwar Singh, who stood firm under the bar for Punjab when it won the Santosh Trophy recently beating Bengal on penalties, was the man of the moment. All eleven players from each side, including the goalkeepers who took the shot scored. But the Goan side panicked and substituted its regular goalkeeper, Milagrio Medeira with Krishna Kalsiya when it was leading 8-7 in the sudden-death. Later after the goalkeepers also took their mandatory shots and scored, the cycle resumed with Rocus Fernandes taking the 12th shot for Salgaocar. He scored without a hitch, but just as BSF's Raghubir Singh moved towards the spot, Salgaocar captain Mickey Fernandes put on the gloves and stood under the bar. His presence hardly made any difference as Raghubir struck the equaliser. Francis Fernandes who came in next hit the crosspiece. Samrat Choudhury went ahead and took the crucial penalty and scored past Mickey Fernandes. BSF will join Group B in the pre-quarterfinal league comprising JCT Mills, Phagwara and Tata Football Academy, Jamshedpur.
