HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has declared that all shelterless poor and needy people in rural areas will be provided with a roof in three years, as 18 lakh houses are to be built each year under the Indiramma programme. Inaugurating the Rajiv Gruhakalpa Scheme (RGK), by handing over keys to five of the 544 beneficiaries at Mylardevpally in Ranga Reddy on Tuesday, he said 30 to 35 per cent of 1.65 crore families in the State did not own houses. He recalled the Government's promise soon after coming power to provide houses in five years to all the poor. Dr. Reddy stated that while the Telugu Desam regime could merely build one lakh houses, 12 lakh houses were constructed in the last two years. With a view to solving the housing problem permanently, a massive programme was taken up under Indiramma and it was progressing at a frenetic pace. This year's 18 lakh houses would be completed by March 31 next. Referring to the RGK (for building houses for middle and lower income groups in urban areas), he said 70,000 houses would be constructed this year at a cost of Rs.700 crores. Minister for Mines P. Sabitha Reddy said one lakh houses were being built in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts. State-Level Banker's Committee Convener A.L. Nageswar Rao, SBH Chief General Manager R.P. Sinha and AP Housing Board Chairman P. Swamy spoke.
