Follow code of conduct: Collector

Staff Reporter

Parties asked to intimate the police about details of any proposed meeting

  • Parties banned from seeking vote in the name of caste, community
  • District-level monitoring panel has been formed

KOZHIKODE: District Collector A. Jayathilak has asked political parties to follow the model code of conduct for the Thiruvambadi byelections.

No one should seek votes in the name of caste or community. Places of worship should not be used as venue for election campaign. Political parties or candidates should not allow their cadres/followers to use an individual's plot, building or wall without his/her permission to erect flag poles, hang banners, write slogans or graffiti. The place and time of any proposed meeting should be intimated to the police authorities before time so as to enable the police to make necessary arrangements to maintain law and order and control traffic.

A political party or candidate taking out a procession should intimate the police authorities about the time and place of beginning of the procession, its route, and the time it will conclude. The procession should be organised in such a way so as to not disrupt flow of traffic.

The political party in power either at the Centre or the State should desist from creating a situation where complaints are raised about the misuse of official position for campaigning.

Addressing a meeting of representatives of political parties as part of enforcement of the model code of conduct here on Tuesday, the Collector requested their cooperation. A district-level monitoring committee involving representatives of political parties and officials has been formed to observe the enforcement of the model code.

A total of 157 booths will be set up. The counting of votes will be held at Government Law College. The election observer will reach the district on Thursday.

Another meeting of representatives of political parties has been called at the PWD Rest House on Thursday, an official release quoting the returning officer said.
