NEW DELHI: The Centre on Wednesday announced the setting up of a national commission on sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes in Andhra Pradesh. Constituted following the Supreme Court striking down the Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Castes (Rationalisation of Reservation) Act, 2000 pertaining to sub-categorisation of SCs in the State, the commission will be headed by a retired Supreme Court judge.
Terms of reference
The terms of reference of the commission are to examine various facets of the demand for sub-categorisation of SCs in Andhra Pradesh subsequent to the Supreme Court judgement, examine the constitutional, statutory and legal ramifications of the demand for sub-categorisation of the SCs and make recommendations on the future course of action, clearly specifying the grounds and the criteria on which these recommendations are based.
One-year term
The term of the commission will be one year from the date of taking over of the charge by the chairperson. The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on December 10, 2004, to recommend to the Centre to take up the matter in Parliament.
