HYDERABAD: Director-General of Police Swaranjit Sen has defended accelerated promotions to police personnel involved in encounters with extremists saying it is a conscious decision by the State Government to reward those who have put their lives at stake in the service of civil society.

Reacting to notices issued by the Supreme Court to the State and Central Governments and the National Human Rights Commission to explain the procedure followed in extending such promotions, Mr. Sen told reporters on Wednesday that the apex court had merely sought to know how and why they were given. "We will offer our explanation," he remarked.

Mr. Sen admitted that accelerated promotions were being given in the Police Department for outstanding anti-naxalite operations. There was no move to scrap the system. Earlier, the DGP inaugurated a museum at the State Forensic Science Laboratory. It contains exhibits on various paraphernalia used in crime.
