BHUBANESWAR: Orissa Agriculture Minister Surendra Nath Nayak on Wednesday denied that any cotton farmer had committed suicide in Bolangir district out of frustration after failing to repay his crop loan. Making a statement on the issue, Mr. Nayak said investigation by a high-level official team revealed that Gangaram Nag, resident of Pattapali village, had apparently taken the extreme step on the night of November 10 as his marriage proposal failed to materialise. Gangaram's family had four acres of land and on two acres they had grown cotton by taking fertilizer and other materials on credit from a local trader. The family, which was expected to earn about Rs. 10,000 from the cotton crop, had already repaid Rs. 2,000, Mr. Nayak said. The Minister said Gangaram was partially blind and was not mentally healthy for which nobody was agreeing to his marriage. The Minister's statement was in response to the Opposition demand for a clarification on the suicide incident.
