Haryana shows off flower power

NEW DELHI: It was an example of flower power at its best at the India International Trade Fair here on Wednesday. With the floriculture stall at the Haryana Pavilion drawing huge numbers, it was a chance for the State to show off its prized gladiolus.

The cultivation of gladiolus -- originally a European flower -- in Haryana has been very successful, especially in the National Capital Region areas of Gurgaon, Sonepat and Faridabad. A long-lasting flower, it stays fresh for a week. The flowers have turned the fortunes of marginal farmers who were growing paddy and wheat over and over again. Since there is a large flower market in Delhi, farmers now get up to Rs.1 lakh per acre worth of yield through their cultivation.

The students had made a 35-minute presentation to a panel of nine judges at NASA and undergone a 15-minute rebuttal round before they won the competition.
