AERB gets ISO certification

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) in charge of protecting people from radiation, by enforcing stringent norms for performance of different nuclear activities in the country, has got ISO 9001.2000 Certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

AERB Chairman S.K. Sharma received the certificate from BIS Deputy Director General A.S. Basu at a simple ceremony here on Wednesday, said a press note.

The BIS issued the certificate after detailed examination of the AERB's quality management systems, which were found to be of the specified standard.

The AERB applies these systems for safety review procedures, regulatory inspections and developing safety regulations for performance of various nuclear plants and related activities.

With enforcing its rigorous safety norms, in-depth safety reviews and elaborate inspections of nuclear and radiation facilities in the country, the AERB has ensured that the atomic installations in the country compared with the best in the world.

An AERB clearance is a must at every stage of design, construction and operation of nuclear power plants.

In recent times, exhaustive AERB review had led to implementation of several retrofits and safety upgrades in older nuclear power plants at Tarapur, Rawatbhata and Kalpakkam and safety clearance for start-up and operation of new power reactors at Tarapur, TAPS 3 and 4, each of 540 MWe capacity.
