Sealing drive triggers panic

Staff Reporter

IIPM buildings pulled down, several organisations vacate premises

  • MCD squads target marble market
  • Commercial activity in places meant for culture promotion

NEW DELHI: Despite instructions from the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee to step up the ongoing sealing drive, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday targeted just 62 units (shops and offices) in the south and west zones.

Besides carrying out the exercise in the Qutab Institutional Area in south Delhi, where institutional land was being misused for commercial purposes, MCD squads targeted the marble market at Raja Garden on Ring Road.

They sealed four major pieces of propertyin the Qutab Institutional Area. Not only the two multistorey buildings of a prominent business school — IIPM — but also offices of some private organisations were targeted.

The MCD action for the second consecutive day in the area caused panic, and several organisations, including The Indian Express and some multinational organisations, vacated their premises.

    Government offices not spared

On Tuesday, the MCD sealed a multistorey building of the Vaitalik Cultural Association and a five-storey structure — Nam Gyal. Both these places were meant for promoting cultural activities but commercial activities were going on there. Some government offices were also sealed in the area.

    Land at concessional rates

The Delhi Development Authority had developed the Qutab Institutional Area and allotted land to educational and cultural organisations at concessional rates.

But over the years, a large number of offices and other commercial activities started there illegally.

Some organisations rented out entire buildings in violation of rules.

The MCD also sealed 54 units between Raja Garden Chowk and Mayapuri on Ring Road. It mainly targeted marble stores and those selling other construction materials.

Eight units were sealed on posh Africa Avenue Road in the south zone. There owners already vacated much of the sealed property.

On Tuesday, 261 units were sealed — 132 in the Najafgarh zone and 129 in the south zone. So far, the MCD has sealed 800 units, whose owners earlier filed affidavits with the civic body.

    Demolished

In east Delhi, the MCD demolished unauthorised constructions at Janta Flats in G.T.B. Enclave. The drive in the area will continue for another two days.
