TAMBARAM: Some buildings near the busy Kathipara intersection was demolished on Wednesday to enable free flow of traffic.

The demolition exercise was carried out following instructions from the Kancheepuram District Collector, and after giving prior information to the occupants of these buildings.

The work was carried out by the National Highways Authority of India and Revenue Department officials of Kancheepuram district. Police personnel from the St. Thomas Mount police district gave them protection.

The demolished buildings housed a garment making unit, a guesthouse and staff quarters for a nearby hotel.

Easy traffic flow

Officials said the demolition was to facilitate easy flow of traffic and pedestrian movement at the Kathipara intersection, where the NHAI is building a grade separator.

The land to the commercial establishments was given on lease and the agreement period had expired.

Neither was the lease agreement renewed, nor had the Government granted any special permission to lessees to continue to occupy government land, officials added.
