TIRUCHI: The Joint Commissioner of Labour, Madurai, Jayasingan, underlined the importance of creating awareness among all sections of the society of the recent amendment made to the Child Labour Abolition and Regulation Act, 1986, which totally prevents employment of child labour in domestic and non-hazardous commercial establishments. Speaking at a meeting of the officials of the Labour Department to review the progress of the various schemes here recently, he called upon the officials to give top priority to putting an end to the child labour menace. Special campaigns should be taken up to inform the people on the ill effects of employing children below 14 years as domestic help, he said.
Enrolment in Board
He also discussed with the officials on the steps taken for the enrolment of members in the Construction Workers Welfare Board after the government announced the waiver of enrolment fee. A construction worker, Nagaraj of Thuvakkudi, and woman labourer Vellachi of Tiruverumbur had died recently. Mr. Jayasingan also distributed cheques for Rs. 17,000 and Rs. 12,000 to Selvi, wife of Nagaraj and Kodiyarasi, daughter of Vellachi, as welfare assistance from the Construction Workers Welfare Board fund. The Deputy Commissioner of Labour, Ravindranath, and the Inspector of Labour, A. Divyanathan, among others, were present.
