HYDERABAD: The MCH has slapped a fine of 10 per cent of the contracted amount on the private contractor in charge of street lighting in Banjara Hills for failing to ensure that the lights were switched off during the day. The Assistant Engineer (Electrical) of the area has also been reverted back to his parent department for dereliction of duty. The action follows Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's directive to CPDCL and MCH when he noticed streetlights glowing during the day on Tuesday. MCH maintains streetlights and pays bills to the CPDCL for usage of power annually. Three private contractors -- Bajaj, Space age and S.R. Communications -- have been served with notices to produce annual maintenance certificates on fitness of the timers following the Banjara Hills incident. Interestingly, the entire contractual package to these three firms for maintenance of streetlights was extended by another year recently since there was no alternative!
Special campaign
The health and sanitation wing has in the meantime taken up a special drive to check open urination in the twin cities. About 286 persons were penalised and Rs.12,080 was collected as fine. A maximum of Rs. 50 is being imposed as fine.
