3 lakhs stolen by distracting attention of car owner

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Two motorcycle-borne youngsters took away Rs. 3 lakhs from a car after diverting the attention of a retired engineer Govind Venu, near Kothapet crossroads on Wednesday.

The victim withdrew the money from ICICI Bank at Chaitanyapuri and kept it on the front seat. As he was driving to his relative's house in Vanasthalipuram, two motorcyclists overtook his car and told him that the rear tyre of the car had gone flat, police said. An unsuspecting Mr. Venu pulled over and got off the vehicle to check the tyres, when the duo collected the cash bag and sped away.

Four days ago, thieves had stolen Rs. 90,000 from the side box of a motorcycle parked at Kothapet old court complex. Police suspect involvement of a Chennai-based gang which is adept in diverting attention and stealing money or jewellery. A few months ago, gangsters struck using the same modus operandi and the police arrested some gang members also.
