City to be declared rabies-free

KOCHI: Kochi will be declared the first city in the State to implement the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), in association with the Kochi Corporation and the Animal Husbandry Department, would organise seminars and symposia on issues related to animal welfare as part of the programme, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish told mediapersons here on Wednesday.

The ABC programme would be implemented with the support of the Animal Welfare Board of India. The cost of implementing the programme would be Rs.4.45 lakh.

The two-day programme would begin on November 18 at Ernakulam Town Hall. Maneka Gandhi, MP, would hand over a letter declaring Kochi as a rabies-free city to Mayor Mercy Williams on the occasion. S. Sarma, Minister for Fisheries, would inaugurate the programme at 4 p.m.

Ms. Gandhi, film actor Amala and officials of the Forest and Wildlife Department would attend the seminar on November 19 at 9.30 a.m.

A photo exhibition would also be held in connection with the seminar.
