Thiruvananthapuram: Local people on Wednesday staged a demonstration at the KINFRA apparel park in protest against the setting up off a clay factory there. The demonstrators led by the Pallithura parish priest blocked the Thumpa-Perumathura road for over an hour in the morning. They were later arrested and removed by the police. The local people staged the demonstration fearing that the proposed clay factory would pollute the environment and overexploit the meagre ground water resources in the coastal area. The police said the promoters of the factory had got clearance from the Pollution Control Board and other Government departments. They had also procured an order from the High Court in their favour. The arrested persons were charged with violating a court order, trespass and unlawful assembly. They were later given bail from the Kazhakuttam police station.
