Kakinada: The failure of the successive governments during past three decades in effective implementation of the provisions of the acts has led to usurping of large extent of assigned lands by affluent sections, according to Jalli Wilson, secretary AP Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham.

At a press conference here on Thursday, he said if the assigned lands alienation prohibition law was implemented in right earnest, the present state of affairs with the assigned lands could not have arisen.

`Many lands alienated'

In East Godavari district itself, a majority of the assigned house sites and agricultural lands were alienated and attributed it to the poverty of beneficiaries.

He said the Karmika Sangham launched an agitation on Wednesday by occupying the alienated assigned lands to the extent of 559 acres in Antharvedi. The land was originally assigned to 1,100 beneficiaries in the name of field labour co-operative society.

The demand

Mr. Wilson demanded that the assigned lands should be resumed by government and redistributed to the eligible poor instead of allotting to industrialists.

He said the Karmika Sangham would continue to occupy the alienated lands all over the State, if the government failed to take any action.

Claim derided

Ridiculing the government's claims on distribution of lands to the poor, Mr. Wilson said that except giving pattas to sites and lands already under occupation, ceiling lands were not touched during the last two rounds of the programme till now in the State.

He wanted the government to prove its sincerity and commitment by distributing 1.20 crore acres of land.

T. Madhu, district secretary of Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham, was also present at the press conference.
