CHENNAI: Prasad Group, one of Asia's biggest movie post-production labs, will soon re-enter film production after a decade-long hiatus.

Ramesh Prasad, son of legendary director-producer L.V. Prasad and managing director of Prasad Labs, made the announcement at the 50th anniversary get-together at a star hotel in Chennai recently.

The labs were set up using profits made by Prasad Film Productions and the time had come to revisit the business, he said.

Some of Mr. L.V. Prasad's associates and a few film aficionados turned up for the 50th anniversary dinner.

Speakers, including director K. Balachander who directed the Kamal Hassan-starer "Ek Duje Keeliye" for Prasad Productions in 1982, hailed Mr. Prasad as "one of the pillars of South Indian cinema."

Adulation

He recalled with adulation his respect for Mr. Prasad. "I am proud that I was associated with such a great personality," he added.

Navodaya founder-director Appachan fondly recalled his association with Prasad Laboratories.

Director Mani Ratnam appreciated the strides made by the laboratories over the years.

In his speech, Mr. Prasad made an appeal to production houses to streamline their release schedule so that developing and printing could be carried out in the best possible manner.

He said lab assistants and delivery persons often had to work against time to deliver prints to the theatres.

"Several of our employees have never celebrated their Deepavalis and Pongals because of the nature of our work. This is an occasion to thank them for that."

Others at Prasad's 50th anniversary dinner included cinematographer-director P.C. Sreeram, producer Thyagarajan and actor Prasanth.

The Prasad family was in full attendance.
