Early implementation of Madurai-Kottayam line sought

Staff Reporter

MADURAI : The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called for the early implementation of the Madurai-Kottayam broad gauge railway line.

In a memorandum submitted to the Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, the chamber president, S. Rethinavelu, said the proposed line would enhance freight movement between the two destinations and stimulate economic growth in the region. The line would also link the Tuticorin and Cochin harbour.

The introduction of push and pull (DEMU) service on the Dindigul-Madurai-Virudhunagar sector would go a long way in benefiting commuters.

The patronage would be good even if the proposed DEMU service were to be operated five times a day.

While appreciating the move to establish a double BG line between Kanyakumari and Chennai with electrification, the chamber president urged the Railway Board to expedite the ongoing doubling works between Madurai and Dindigul where the utility of the section had crossed 160 per cent.

The double BG line would not only ease congestion but also facilitate introduction of new trains. The conversion of the Dindigul-Coimbatore section should also be speeded up.

Steps should be taken for expediting the Virudhunagar-Aruppukottai-Manamadurai gauge conversion project since it would provide an alternative route to Chennai via Karaikudi and Mayavaram.

The chamber president also sought escalator facility at the Madurai railway station and better passenger amenities at Madurai East and Koodal Nagar railway stations.
