CBI awaits records in paper leak case

CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation is awaiting receipt of documents and records from the Tamil Nadu Police, to start investigating the case relating to leakage of question papers in the examination for selection of 1,997 Grade II police constables in the State last year. The agency will then decide which unit should investigate the matter.

After the leakage of question papers twice, in March and June 2005, the police ordered a departmental inquiry. Twenty-four officials, including an Inspector-General of Police, were suspended (The suspension of the IGP has since been revoked). Fourteen persons, including four constables and a head constable, were arrested.

What added to the controversy was the death of a police constable, Jeevarathinam, who had been questioned in connection with the leakage. He was run over by a train between Guindy and St. Thomas Mount railway stations.

Cover-up alleged

Following a petition by a candidate, A. Thandapani of Vellore district, who alleged there was a "massive cover-up" to shield "high-ranking police officials," the Madras High Court ordered a CBI probe. The State Government preferred an appeal against this. Last month, the apex court upheld the Madras High Court order.A senior police officer said the documents were ready with the CB-CID, which handled the case earlier.

They would be given to the CBI after a copy of the Supreme Court order was received.
