"Water released from dam posing flood threat"

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Thursday called upon the Central and State Governments to act quickly to prevent water discharged from the Mullaperiyar dam from going waste.

In a statement here, she said the release of 3000 cubic feet water from the dam posed a grave threat of flood to five southern districts as the water level in the Vaigai dam had already reached its full capacity. The Iraichal road bridge on the Kumuli hills had been submerged, disrupting vehicular movement to Kerala.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said farmers belonging to the five districts were agitated over the prevailing situation and were asking why the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government had failed to raise the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam to 142 feet, despite a Supreme Court direction.

Just as the water level crossed the136 feet mark, owing to torrential rain, the State Government should have resorted to measures to raise the level to 142 feet. It had not issued any order to the Public Works Department personnel in this regard, she said.
