VIJAYAWADA : Officials of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited launched Optical Overlay Access Network in the city on Thursday with a view to providing end-to-end fibre connectivity for broadband users of higher bandwidths.

Already introduced in the State Capital, the new overlay access network was provided next in Vijayawada given its commercial, political and strategic importance in the State, said BSNL general manager P. Balagangadhara Rao. The optical fibre cable was laid covering a distance of 50 km in the city at a cost of Rs. 5 crores, covering Satyanarayanapuram, Machavaram, Autonagar, Governorpet, Ramavarappadu and other areas.

    Better quality

Addressing the inaugural function, Mr. Rao said the overlay access network would provide much higher quality service to users, as it involved transmission through the medium of light with far less resistance. While repeaters would be needed to ensure better service at every three to four km in case of copper cables, they would be required for every 70 to 80 km in case of optical fibre cable. I.N.Y. Prasad, general manager, transmission projects, AP, presided. In Vijayawada, the State Bank of India zonal office and Canara Bank already began using these services. Potential users were identified as banks, ATMs, colleges, hospitals etc.
