Staff Reporter

Cases detected in Ambalappuzha, Kuttanad

ALAPPUZHA: After a brief lull, chikungunya fever which has claimed the lives of more than 120 people in the district in the past two months has reared its head in several areas of the district.

Fever patients with symptoms of chikungunya had sought treatment at various hospitals in the district in recent days, said the Alappuzha district medical office in a press release. As many as 1,123 persons sought treatment for viral fever in various hospitals on November 13 and 96 of them showed symptoms of chikungunya, said the District Medical Officer (DMO).

While the outbreak of chikungunya was mostly confined to Cherthala taluk earlier, a large number of cases with symptoms of the disease are now being reported from Ambalappuzha, Kuttanad and Karthikappally taluks. There have been reports of one death owing to chikungunya at Thanneermukkom on November 13 but the DMO denied it. Meanwhile, there are reports of a large number of people who had been afflicted with chikungunya earlier showing symptoms of the disease. These have been reported from Mannacherry, Muhamma and Thanneermukkom panchayats and Alappuzha and Cherthala municipalities.

Youth Congress State general secretary P. Sabu said the health authorities were trying to cover up the spread of chikungunya. The authorities had slowed the implementation of preventive measures.
