Indian challenge comes to end

NEW DELHI: Fourth seed Olga Panova of Russia beat sixth-seeded Isha Lakhani 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(5) in the quarterfinals of the Poona Club $25,000 ITF women's tennis tournament here on Thursday.

In another quarterfinal encounter unseeded Ksenia Palkina of Kyrgyzstan knocked out fifth-seeded Ankita Bhambri 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to wipe out the Indian challenge.

The results: Singles (quarterfinals): Akgul Amanmuradova (Uzb) bt Rushmi Chakravarthi 6-0, 6-3; Kseniz Palkina (Kgz) bt Ankita Bhambri 6-4, 3-6, 6-3; Olga Panova (Rus) bt Isha Lakhani 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(5); Amina Rakhim (Kaz) bt Cassandra Barr (Aus) 6-2, 6-2.

Doubles (semifinals): Olga Panova (Rus) and Agnes Szatmari (Rom) bt Rushmi Chakravarthi and Ankita Bhambri 6-2, 6-0; Nicole Clerico (Ita) and Ksenia Palkina (Kgz) bt Meghha Vakaria and Sanaa Bhambri 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1.
