KOLKATA: North Zone lifted the prestigious Duleep Trophy for the 16th time, defeating Sri Lanka `A' by eight wickets on the final day of the five-day final at the Eden Gardens here on Thursday. Sri Lanka `A' was awarded the V.J. Divecha Trophy. The victory, achieved 15 minutes from tea, enabled North to tie with West in claiming the trophy for the maximum number of times.
Gritty batting
Sri Lanka `A', overnight 259 for four, added 167 for the loss of six wickets, thanks to some gritty batting by No. 3 Malinda Warnapura. The left-hander progressed from overnight 82 to remain unconquered on 149 (385m, 269b, 23x4). Chamara Silva, who has been named both in the Test and ODI squads for the New Zealand tour, was the first to go falling to a sharp in-cutter from Joginder Sharma for 34. Former India pacer Ashish Nehra bowled effectively for the first time in the match, dismissing Kaushal Silva with a sharp incoming ball for 35. Off-spinner Rajesh Sharma was among the wickets again, claiming five for 119 for a match haul of nine for 204.
Chopra sizzles
The Sri Lankan second innings ended 15 minutes after lunch for a total of 426, leaving North with a target of 87 runs. North lost Gautam Gambhir and Ravneet Ricky cheaply. Aakash Chopra, first innings centurion, capped his half-century with a smart square cut to backward point fence to bring up the victory.
