Aditya, Jaisal in maiden final

KOCHI : Friends and doubles partners, Kochi's Aditya Bhat and Jaisal Kohli Mariwala marched to their maiden under-14 boys singles final in the RSC-MBTA AITA Talent Series tennis tournament at Regional Sports Centre, Kadavanthra, on Thursday.

The eighth-seeded Aditya, playing his third National circuit event, upset Tamil Nadu's top-seeded Kurup Karan 6-3, 7-6(7-1) while the second-seeded Jaisal comfortably led 6-0, 2-0 when his opponent Ashwin Srivatsav conceded the semifinal.

Rathnika wins

Later, Thiruvananthapuram's Rathnika Prasad defeated Sneha Susan Thomas, in an all-Kerala final, to bag the under-14 girls title.

Lefthander Aditya, who relishes a fast attacking game, dominated the first set and led 4-1 in the second but suddenly suffered moments of self-doubt and confusion when Kurup turned to high lobs for redemption.

The set moved to the tie-breaker but Aditya was back to his old self by then and finished the match without much fuss.

Quarterfinals: Kurup bt V.Vishal (TN) 6-1, 6-0; Aditya bt Praveen Raj (TN) 7-5, 6-3; Ashwin bt Anvit Bandre (Guj) 6-1, 6-3; Jaisal bt Raj Vishnu (TN) 6-0, 6-2.

Under-12 boys: Semifinal: Anvit Bandre (Guj) bt V. Vishal (TN) 6-3, 6-0.

Quarterfinals: Kurup Karan bt Rupesh Aadic (TN) 6-1, 6-0; H.Suraj (Ker) bt Mohammed Hamraz (Ker) 4-6, 6-1, 6-3; Vishal bt Sachin Vinoth (Ker) 7-6 (7-5), 6-1; Bandre bt Venkata N. Ramanan (TN) 6-1, 6-2.

Under-14 girls: Final: Rathnika Prasad (Ker) bt Sneha Susan Thomas (Ker) 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Semifinals: Rathnika bt Minu R. Raju (Ker) 6-3, 5-7, 6-3; Sneha bt A.V. Rithika (Ker) 6-3, 6-4.
