HEAVY HEADGEAR: Many people in Belgaum are averse to wearing helmets.

BELGAUM: The decision of the State Government making the wearing of helmets compulsory for two-wheeler riders has evoked mixed reactions.

While some people agree that helmets can save lives and prevent severe injuries, many blame the bad condition of roads and inefficient traffic management for accidents.

But the fact is that a majority of accidents are caused by reckless driving. Will wearing helmets help prevent reckless driving?

Also, there are reports quoting medical professionals stating that wearing a helmet will not cause spondylitis. However, a senior doctor here, S.B. Kulkarni, says the use of heavy helmets can result in spondylitis and pain in the neck region. The problem may occur among middle-aged people if they wear helmets for long hours. Users feel that the greatest disadvantage of wearing helmets, particularly full-face helmets, is that it impairs the field of vision. Yet safety is a matter of concern. Therefore, many motorcyclists say the Government should first provide good roads and ensure that speed breakers are scientifically designed.
