BIDAR: Students of the Government Primary School in Bhangur in Humnabad took a vow to conserve water and harvest rainwater as part of the Children's Day celebration, on Thursday. They planted over 400 saplings distributed by the Department of Forests on the occasion. The water conservation and rainwater harvesting awareness jatha was organised by Parisara Vahini, a non-governmental organisation, and the State Bank of India. Parisara Vahini president Shailendra Kavadi urged farmers to construct farm ponds in their fields. "The cost and labour that goes into building farm ponds are negligible, but the profits are huge. The profits can be seen just after the first rain. The water stored in the aquifer in one square metre of a soak pit is a lakh litres. A water soaked by a farm pond measuring 10 square metre therefore is more than ten lakh litres, which is enough to cultivate a crop on a hectare of land," he said.
