Government urged to ban `Shoba Yatra' in Madikeri

MADIKERI: Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) State president Sunil Kumar Bajal on Thursday urged the State Government not to accord permission to the Sangh Parivar to take out "Shoba Yatra" and organise Datta Jayanti celebrations at Bababudangiri from December 2 to 4, to maintain communal amity in the State.

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Bajal said the DYFI would take out a "Souharda Yatra", on November 23, from Chikmagalur town to Bababudangiri to lay emphasis on communal harmony. Over 2,500 youngsters would take part in the march, including 200 from Kodagu, Mr. Bajal said.

He charged the Sangh Parivar with violating the court orders by conducting Datta Jayanti every year at the Darga in Bababudangiri since 1997. It was conducted even during the S.M. Krishna regime, he said. The Dharam Singh Government then made amends by banning the celebrations.

Pressure

The BJP was pressuring the Government over the issue and the parivar was trying to take advantage of it, Mr. Bajal alleged. He accused the BJP of fomenting communal feelings among the people in the State in the name of Datta Jayanti. Efforts were being made to tarnish the fair image of the State.

The communal riots in Mangalore and surroundings recently were cases in point, Mr. Bajal said.

Farewell

The team from Kodagu would be seen off from Siddapur on November 22. CPI(M) leader Shivaram Reddy and DYFI leader S.Y. Gurushant would take part in the Souharda Yatra. Kodagu DYFI district president B.S. Ramanath, vice-president Sunil and secretary P.R. Bharath were present.
