Proposals for uniform colour code for school vehicles, signboards to be discussed

CHENNAI: Members of the task force appointed by the State Government to look into the issue of road safety for school children will meet with school heads for a state-level conference to be held here on Friday.

Proposals such as a uniform colour code for school vehicles and signboards saying `school children' for such vehicles , which were mooted earlier, would be discussed. The suggestions made in the conference will be submitted to the Government, based on which an action plan would be drawn.

In an attempt to address the increasing number of fatal accidents involving school children, the Government appointed a seven-member task force in August. It was asked to study in detail the possible causes for such accidents and asked to come up with suggestions for preventive measures.

The task force includes Joint Commissioner of Police Traffic Sunil Kumar, Joint Transport Commissioner S. Murugaia, N.Vijayan, principal, Zion Matriculation, besides non-governmental organisations and parent teacher association's nominees.

Presentations

On Friday, heads of various government, aided and matriculation schools across the State will make presentations on `Safety norms to be adopted to prevent accidents'. A panel of judges will choose the best three presentations.

The 30 revenue districts were classified under 10 zones, with three districts in each. One school head, making a presentation with inputs from his/her counterparts in the zone, will represent each zone.
