"Permission denied for security reasons"

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The city police cited security as the principal reason for denying permission to the MDMK for a protest in front of the Sri Lankan High Commission.

A city police release said the MDMK chief, Vaiko, had sought permission to take out a procession at 10 a.m. on Friday, starting near the Nageswara Rao park and reaching the Sri Lankan High Commission via Luz Church Road and TTK Road. It was to protest the killing of Tamilians in Sri Lanka. Protests in front of foreign embassies were not allowed under any circumstances in the interests of security. The fact that the agitation was on the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils did not prejudice the order, it added.

The police said it would consider granting permission if the procession was taken along the approved route from Chennai Munroe Statue to the Government Guest House, Chepauk.
