CHENNAI : Two days, 26 schools and a lot of scientific spirit. The district-level science exhibition, inaugurated at Wesley Higher Secondary School on Thursday, has more than 100 exhibits covering mainly areas such as environment and renewable energy sources.

There were a number of first-timers whose contagious enthusiasm was palpable while they happily explained scientific concepts.

A. Divyapriya from Avvai Home TVR Higher Secondary School said her energy conversion explanation using a nail and then a lemon would help pass on the knowledge to the visitors.

The same eager belief was shared by Manoj Kumar from the host school who talked about air and water pollution using an exhibit made from household materials.

M. Dinesh, A. Prabhu and M. Ratnakar Radha of Kumaraja Muthiah HSS went a little beyond explanations to create models of a windmill and a hydroelectric plant using cardboard, thermocol and voltmeter from the school lab.

G. Naveen from St. Patrick's Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School, used the exhibition not just to put theory into practice but also to invent a `Life Detection Using Wireless Communication.' It cost him Rs. 4,000, a powerful antenna and a mini-camera from Ritchie Street.

"I read about a boy, who got trapped in a hole and later got killed because nobody could rescue him on time. This is for rescuing people like that," said Naveen.

Winners will be selected at the end of the two-day exhibition, organised by Central Chennai education district, to represent at the State-level exhibition.

Similar exhibitions were also held in the other educational districts in the city.
