Gujarat Corporation strikes oil

GANDHINAGAR: The State-owned Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation has successfully recovered crude from the second test well in the Dholka oilfield, near Ingoli village, in Ahmedabad district.

Crude was available at a depth of 1,968 metres.

A Government spokesman said here on Thursday that initial reports indicated that commercial exploitation of at least 1,200 to 1,400 barrels a day from the second well, and the available reserve was estimated at over Rs. 1,200 crore.

Commercial exploitation

The Corporation earlier spudded well number one in the same oilfield in September 2004, and commercial exploitation of 900-1,200 barrels a day was expected to begin soon.

The Corporation had filed an application with the Centre to begin commercial exploitation of crude from the Dholka oilfield.

The work would be taken up jointly by the Corporation, Gas Authority of India Limited and the Centre.

Same oilfield

The spokesman said it was the same oilfield where the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation conducted tests and gave up the effort, believing no crude was available.

It was at the behest of Chief Minister Narendra Modi that the State Corporation took the chance to go further deep and recover crude from the area.
