JNUTA polls

NEW DELHI: After the much-hyped polls to the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU), elections to the JNU Teachers' Association (JNUTA) that took place on Thursday were a much more quiet affair.

Unlike the aggressive tussle for power in the case of the students' union elections, JNUTA office-bearers were elected unopposed after the last date of withdrawal this Thursday. Chaman Lal from the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies (SLLSC) has been elected president and is heading the JNUTA team.

The posts of vice-president have been secured by Charanjit Singh from SLLSC and Raman Prasad Sinha also from SLLSC. The post of secretary was won by M.M. Kunju School from the School of International Studies (SIS).

Man arrested

NEW DELHI: An autorickshaw driver has been arrested by the West Delhi police for allegedly killing a woman at Punjabi Bagh in West Delhi on Wednesday. The accused had thrown acid on her in a park and escaped.

According to the police, a call was received at Punjabi Bagh police station saying that somebody had thrown acid at a woman -- later identified as Suman -- in a park at East Punjabi Bagh. In her dying declaration, Suman alleged that one Umesh had attacked her with acid. Following investigations, the police arrested Umesh on Thursday.

`Cheat' nabbed

NEW DELHI: A man who allegedly managed to sneak out of a bank with Rs. 20,000 that he had taken from a woman on the pretext of counting them has been arrested by the East Delhi police.

According to the police, the accused Amjad Khan, a resident of Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh, had escaped with Rs. 20,000 which belonged to a woman, Kumari Gora, of Gandhi Nagar.

Impostor held

NEW DELHI: A young man allegedly posing as a Delhi police sub-inspector was arrested by the New Delhi police on Thursday when he tried to sneak inside Pragati Maidan where the annual trade fair is going on.

Interrogation of the accused, identified as Hardeep, son of Dharampal, a resident of Sonepat in Haryana , revealed that he planned to get away with expensive jewellery from one of the stalls.
