Police arrest eight gang members

They were allegedly planning to kill a rival gang member

BANGALORE: High drama prevailed as a city police team chased and fired at a vehicle, before arresting a gang of eight persons that had come prepared to allegedly kill a rival gang member at Govindashettypalya on Hosur Road, on Thursday afternoon.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police, South East Division, Soumendu Mukherjee, the arrested were identified as Hanumantha, Rajesh, Garudappa, Appu, Shanth Kumar, D. Muniappa, Devaraj and Chandra, all members of a gang led by Shimoga Nagar. Nagar, along with three others, Ramesh, Parmesh and Nagaraj, escaped.

Around noon, the accused were spotted moving in vehicles from Outer Ring Road towards Hosur Road. When the police followed the vehicles, the gang entered Hosur road and started speeding towards Electronics City. A police team under Electronics City inspector was alerted, which rushed to Hosur Road to intercept the vehicles.

But the vehicles almost ran over the policemen, and tried to speed away. Then the Electronic City inspector Sudarshan opened fire to deflate the tyre of one of the speeding vehicles. But the cars kept moving, and entered a bylane opposite the main entrance to Electronics City. After a while, the passengers abandoned the vehicle and started to run. Police chased and caught eight persons.

Mr. Mukherjee, who supervised the operations, said the police recovered eight choppers, four mobile phones, a car and a SUV from the accused. "On inquiry, it was found that, apart from committing dacoity, the gang had also planned to kill another anti-social element Sarpesh, who had tried to kill one of the gang members Ramesh earlier." Sarpesh's gang, he added, had also tried to kill Ramesh's brother last year.

Receipts of ornaments pledged to pawnbrokers were recovered from them. This indicated that the gang had been possibly involved in property offences earlier as well, along with assault and murder, Mr. Mukherjee said.

City Police Commissioner N. Achuta Rao has announced rewards for all the police teams that were involved in Thursday's operations.
