BANGALORE: Continuing its drive against illegal use of basements for commercial purposes, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) on Friday cleared the cellar of Sukh Sagar in Gandhinagar and created space for vehicle parking. BMP officials, who had issued two notices to Suresh Pujari, owner of the establishment, to stop using the basement and setback area for commercial purposes, got cracking on Friday. BMP Joint Commissioner (West) M.A. Khalid, who led the operation, slapped a fine of Rs. 1 lakh on the owner. The operation was carried out by more than 100 BMP employees with assistance from the local police and personnel from the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF). Two excavators, two jet hammers and four lorries were deployed to clear the basement.
Encroachments
The BMP demolished 12 houses that had illegally come up in the surrounding of Vrushabhavathi Valley in Padmanabhanagar. This valley, which is one of the four major valleys in the city, runs along 25 km. With several encroachments upon storm water drains originating from this valley, the BMP has not been able to expedite work on remodelling of valleys. The civic body has identified 107 such encroachments and 27 have been razed.
