Tirupati: The annual Brahmotsavam at the Padmavathi Ammavari temple in Tiruchanur began on a traditional and colourful note on Friday. `Dhwajarohanam' was performed in the auspicious hours of Dharnurlagnam, which is the first and foremost ceremony in any temple fete. Amid chanting of hymns and to the beat of traditional percussion instruments, the sacred flag was hoisted atop the temple flag post, signalling the beginning of the fete. Earlier, the deity of the goddess was taken in a procession around the temple in `Tiruchi vahanam'. A huge congregation of devotees, including a large number of women, converged at the temple to witness the ritual. In the evening, the deity was rocked in a swing as part of `Unjal Seva' and later taken in a procession on `Chinna Sesha vahanam'.
